  Additional Help - Subject Stress

Recent publications show that up to 75% of illness can in some way be attributed to stress. You need to consider ways of reducing the amount of stress that you are subjected to. Everybody has a threshold that they find acceptable before it can start to effect them both on a physical and emotional level. Stress has a very negative effect on you. It can be described as the response when the demands or pressures on an individual, disturbs a persons emotional and or physical well-being.

Death of a loved one Break up of a relationship Serious personal injury
Overwork Examinations Health worries
Financial worries Family problems Moving home
New baby, children Poor self image Unemployment or loss of employment

What are Common Stress Related Symptoms?

  • Behavioural Changes – be argumentative, less friendly, become withdrawn, avoid people, lose creativity, procrastinate, be reluctant to do job
  • Changes of Feelings – lose sense of humour, lack self esteem, feel irritable, feel apathetic, tearful
  • Change of Thinking – be rigid in opinion, be suspicious, poor concentration, want to leave a job/relationship
  • Mental Health – feelings of anxiety, depression, fear of rejection
  • Feel tired all the time
  • Have sleep problems
  • Experience prolonged minor illnesses
  • Have aches and pains
  • Have headaches and migraine
  • Have digestion issues

It is therefore vitally important that you can identify the causes of the stress, and how to eliminate or manage it.

  • Using stress reduction techniques – breathing, meditation, visualisation
  • Making lifestyle changes
  • Taking a holiday or a break more often
  • Social and family support
  • Better time management and the ability to say ‘no’ to others
  • Hobbies and Leisure time
  • Exercise
  • Pets
  • Being prepared to ask for help
  • Eating a healthy, nutritious diet
  • Taking a holistic therapy such as aromatherapy, reflexology or Indian head massage
  • Looking back at how you have coped before, or what didn’t work for you before
